Transmitter nomenclature

Comment by Chris Gardiner:

One point on the broadcast transmitter numbering system.  Pre WW2 the numbering prefix was SWB (short wave broadcaster but this included all transmitters not just those for broadcasting – but then everything was simple amplitude modulation).  Post WW2 the was changed to BD (B is still broadcast, D is Division).  Then in 1967 the new system was introduced, “B” for broadcast and then numbers 61XX for shortwave, 60XX for medium and long wave, 65XX for Band 2 FM, 73XX for Band 3 TV and 74XX for Band 4/5 TV.  Numbers were often allocated when a design study was undertaken but were never de-allocated if it was not subsequently built so there are missing numbers in the sequence.
